Right from the start, our collaboration with the number 1 in the German DIY and home improvement sector was focused on the digital development of new solutions.
We tested and iteratively optimized our agile product developments based on the hypotheses of the Business Innovation department as an MVP (Minimum Viable Product). Over the years, a "bed planner" or the "DIY boxes" have become innovative customer offers that have now become a permanent fixture in OBI's omni-channel offering as the "Garden Planner" and "CREATE!".

The OBI Garden Planner with 14 Configurators
Plan at Home, finalize at the Hardware Store
The OBI Gartenplaner is a comprehensive service that you can use to realize your own projects for designing your garden or other outdoor areas.
We started with the product idea of a bed planner. The range was then expanded to include a configurator for patio planning.
Once both applications had reached product market fit, the overall project was taken to the next level: the OBI Gartenplaner was created as an intuitive planning tool with a total of 14 configurators.
As part of the omni-channel strategy, it was rolled out in over 300 OBI stores. Here, the materials can be inspected on site and garden plans can be finalized with the OBI experts.
Do you live in a detached house or townhouse? Light plastered or dark clinkered?
After choosing the setting, you can go straight to the variety of floor coverings with numerous filter functions. In addition to a wide range of wood, WPC planks, tiles and stone slabs, the matching edging stones are also available. All changes are visualized directly with photorealistic image renderings. The approximate prices are calculated directly using the square meters indicated. The degree of difficulty and time required for the selected floor covering and the corresponding substructure are also shown so that the project can be better assessed during implementation.
Your individual Planning
Once the terrace has been pre-planned, the individual PDF is generated "on the fly".
This clearly lists the dimensions, the selected products and the material list, including visualization and cost indication. In addition, the building instructions and a checklist for the market visit, where the consultation and finalization of the planning takes place.

Beds, tables, storage, children's or garden furniture - even smart hacks to simply upgrade existing furniture are showcased at CREATE! with lots of creativity, numerous inspirations and specially developed configurators.
As soon as customers have selected their DIY idea, they can enter their individual dimensions and design requirements. Their personal PDF document is then dynamically generated, which contains a list of materials and tools as well as step-by-step instructions for building the new furniture.
The CREATE! by OBI brand now offers an even more comprehensive range, with a variety of ideas and instructions for creative DIY projects.
From "Self-build Boxes" to "Self-assembly Furniture" …
In the beginning, the idea was to offer solutions for self-assembly furniture made from individual materials and tools with creative design suggestions.
Since the customers accepted the offer so positively, it was continuously expanded. The "self-assembly boxes" became the more extensive innovation project "self-assembly furniture", the core of which was again a configurator and the dynamically generated export of the PDF with the individual design specifications, the material list and the assembly instructions.

Numerous ideas were tested on the market, many of which have proven themselves in practice.
Working closely with the OBI team, we continuously developed the digital product – from the MVP to the "self-build furniture" to CREATE! – and optimized its UX, content and functions based on surveys and user tests.
